On November 8, 2021, Athletes Unlimited announced that their inaugural season of the Athletes Unlimited Basketball league will begin on January 26, 2022, and will be held at the Athletes Unlimited Area at the Sports Center of Las Vegas.
Along with the announcement of the upcoming season, the league also announced an additional 10 players.
“Since the launch of Athletes Unlimited Basketball less than a month ago, we’ve had tremendous interest in and excitement for the league. We are so excited to be adding these 10 talented players to our roster. We know that Las Vegas has been a great home for women’s basketball and we only hope that we can add to and build on the momentum, success and fandom already in place," Athletes Unlimited CEO Jon Patricof said.
The roster additions include:
Jantel Lavendar (Indiana Fever)
Kiki Harrigan (Seattle Storm)
Essence Carson (Los Angeles Sparks)
These ladies will join the previously announced first three players of the league, Natasha Cloud, Sydney Colson and Ty Young.
“Athletes Unlimited provides American players an additional opportunity to play in the United States, an opportunity we have always hoped for," Lavender added.
"Staying in the U.S. allows us to spend more time with our families while earning money and not putting as much wear and tear on our bodies, so that we can put out the best product. I am also looking forward to the unique Athletes Unlimited format, every week a new team, playing with – as well as against — some of the best players in our sport every week, I’m excited to be a part of the first group to try this out and I hope it’s something that can be an option for women’s basketball players for many years to come.
Tickets are set to go on sale in December and those who are interested in playing for the league can submit an application for open tryouts here.
The tryouts are scheduled to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, December 11-12 and applications must be in by Friday, December 3, 2021.
